NONNA's HELP

GRANDMAS' KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERTISE ARE CELEBRATED.

There is a restaurant in New York that doesn’t employ chefs, they employ Grandmas. Every day, a different Grandma from around the world designs their own menu and cooks for anticipating patrons.

With Packtown being a first world company with a country heart, this wonderfull initiative introduced by a restaurateur, totally resonates with us.

At Enoteca Maria, an “Italian” restaurant on Hyatt Street, half of the menu changes daily. The fixed half is Italian; the rest is left for rotating cuisines from all over the world. And the people calling the shots are not professional chefs; they are grandmothers. Each night, a “nonna” (Italian for grandmother) from a different country designs a fresh menu, honoring her native cuisine. Friday might have been Sri Lanka; Thursday, the Philippines; Tuesday it might be Armenia.

They also have the nonna’s come on different days to make vats of “Nonnas of the World” sauces from their home country, that the restaurant sells in mason jars, online and in store.

Why don’t you bring a Grandma into your kitchen for a day….or maybe dig out one of Grandma’s recipes and give it your 2023 twist. Reinvention is in for 2023 according to the know in food trends, freshen up an old recipe with a new ingredient or simply deconstruct it and apply a contemporary presentation. With our diverse South African culture, there is a wealth of tradition to be inspired by.
